Rome, Imperial, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A wonderful group of six mold-made pottery oil lamps, all displaying flat, annular bases and wick spouts. Coated in black glaze, the first vessel presents a loop handle, a petite circular fill hole, a projecting spout with an elongated neck, and a rounded shoulder adorned with a lovely abstract relief. The remaining five vessels are all redware and exhibit discoid forms. One boasts a giant fill hole and three spouts. Another lamp has a rounded shoulder and a tiered base. A third redware vessel displays a large fill hole with a flared rim. The final pair of ancient examples showcases similar forms with round shoulders bearing an abstract motif, loop handles, petite fill holes, and recessed central tondos with differing designs; one has a relief of an ox or bull and the other shows the image of a bird. Condition
Redware lamp with large fill hole has chips to rim of fill hole. Restoration to spout of lamp with bull or ox. Softening of detail to all with relief decoration. All have expected nicks/chips, abrasions, and char marks as shown, commensurate with age and use. Otherwise, very nice with lovely earthen deposits throughout.
