- Lot Description
Northern Europe, Viking / Norse culture, ca. 8th to 11th century CE. A beautiful collection of forged iron Viking artifacts: a lengthy dagger with a rectangular guard and a slightly-curved pommel; a medium-sized axe head with a thick butt, a hollow interior cavity now filled with earthen material, and a somewhat flared blade edge; a chisel with a tapering, cylindrical socketing shaft, a thin neck, and a dramatically-flared head with a slender edge; and a horse bit with conjoined central bars, looped terminals, and a pair of large bridle fastener rings. Each item displays wonderful areas of oxidation, making this a wonderful hoard find from ancient northern Europe! Size of largest item (dagger): 2.75" W x 13.125" H (7 cm x 33.3 cm).
Together, these items constituted a Viking hoard. They were treasured items for someone, left behind in antiquity - whether as votive deposits, or, more likely, with the intention of returning to acquire them at a later date. Who knows what may have happened to that original hoarder who was indefinitely waylaid by some circumstance of life a thousand years ago?
