East Asia, Japan, Edo period, ca. 1603 to 1868 CE; (suzu) ca. mid-20th century CE. An attractive ensemble of four cast-copper menuki, petite ornaments meant to be displayed behind the cotton handle wrappings of a traditional Japanese sword. One menuki displays a traditional komainu (analogous to Chinese Foo Dogs) in a striding pose; a second features a strung recurve bow with an archer's glove; and the third Edo menuki bears two red-faced lords confronting one another in their own respective hexagonal frames. A 20th century menuki shows a ceremonial Shinto instrument (known as a suzu) with several spherical bells among fern leaves. Thin layers of gilding (95-98%) decorate some of the finer details, and lustrous patina has developed in most other areas. Size of largest (bow and glove): 1.6" L (4.1 cm); quality of gilding: 95-98%.
