West to Central Asia, Islamic / Persian, Seljuk culture, ca. 12th century CE. A remarkable set of 3 copper lead alloy zoomorphic figurines and a miniature bronze vessel from the Seljuk empire, all with a rich patina of russet and green hues. One figure resembling a lioness stands upright on two legs spread apart and presents with two ears, a prominent nasal bridge, a rounded nose, and a large triangular tab protruding from its flat back. Meanwhile, the second represents a type of long-necked bird seated with a petite beak, bulging eyes, a sizable fanned tail, and a tubular handle connecting its head to its back, decorated with incised striations. Functioning as a finial, the last figurine is another long-necked bird with a curved beak, square-shaped top feather, and erect tail, that stands on an integral plinth featuring a flat circular base, thin neck, and spherical top. Size of largest: 2.5" W x 2.125" H (6.4 cm x 5.4 cm)
Last, the heavy bronze bowl displays an annular base and thick straight walls that rise to a flared rim. Its exterior is intricately decorated with a swirling motif of anthropomorphic designs around the rim and a repeated horizontal pattern encompassing the body, which features a central tondo of varying animals flanked by moufflon-head topped and based columns that are all connected via the moufflons' horns. As birds, lions, and moufflons were all key animals frequently represented throughout Seljuk art, these pieces serve as important examples from ancient Persian culture.
