Joe Tilson (British, b. 1928), "Dionysos", "Kore Lost", and "Demeter's Search" - three etchings with aquatint and carborundum - each one from Limited Edition and number 12/25, signed by the artist, and dated 1982 in pencil. Tilson’s early work embraced one of the primary tenets of Pop Art - advances in technology and the seemingly boundless power of mass media in addition to the hedonism of the sexual revolution. However, his move to Italy brought about a radical shift in his artistic themes. In Italy, Tilson explored Greek and Roman mythology as we see in these three works. Perhaps due to his relocation to Italy, his artwork remains one of the best kept secrets of the British Pop Art movement. Constantly blurring the lines between unique and multiple artworks, many of Tilson’s prints are actually largely hand-painted and his 'paintings' are oftentimes grounded in print-making techniques. This triptych is custom framed under glass. Size: 15.75" L x 14.5" W (40 cm x 36.8 cm); 19.875" L x 18.5" W (50.5 cm x 47 cm) framed
One of the founding figures of British Pop art in the early 1960s, Joe Tilson made artistic waves even before David Hockney and the Beatles. Tilson studied at St. Martin's School of Art and then at the Royal College of Art. Upon winning the esteemed Rome Prize in 1955, Tilson moved to Italy where he still resides today. Tilson is also Royal Academician, and the Royal Academy honored his oeuvre with a retrospective exhibition in 2002.
Tilson is one of England’s most beloved artists. He has created prints, multiples, constructions, paintings, and reliefs. Tilson’s work is represented in public and private collections throughout the world. His first one-man exhibition was hosted by the Marlborough Gallery, London, in 1962, and he continued exhibiting at Marlborough Galleries in New York and Rome until 1977 when he joined the Waddington Galleries. In 1985, just three years after creating the three works featured in this lot, Joe Tilson was elected to membership of the Royal Academy of Arts, London.
