Southeast Asia, Vietnam, Dong Son Culture, ca. late 1st millennium BCE. A pair of cast bronze axe heads with rich green and blue patinas. The first is a long and broad blade with a short hollow socket and downturned, pointed shoulders. The socket forms a small midrib that ends above the shoulders, while the rest of the blade head is relatively flat and flares out to rounded corners. The other axe is asymmetrical with a short hollow neck (filled in with earthen encrustations) and a flat blade that curves to one side. This axe has a brilliant blue and green patina around the edges which is quite lovely. Size (larger): 5.75" L x 3.125" W (14.6 cm x 7.9 cm) (smaller blade): 3.375" L x 4.875" W (8.6 cm x 12.4 cm)
The casting technique for Dong Son bronzes was demanding artistically and technically, and archaeological investigations indicate that Dong Son bronzes were made by local workshops staffed by specialists. These specialists shared knowledge throughout their geographic region, and weapons like these are constructed similarly to those from the Warring States period in China. We know of them mainly from burials, and scholars posit that bronze items - both the making of and ownership of - were controlled by a limited elite who used them to acquire and maintain power over their own people. As elsewhere in the Old World, there is a clear relationship between sophisticated bronze metallurgical technology and the development of highly stratified, militaristic societies.
