Ancient Near East / Central Asia, Sasanian (Sassanian / Sassanid) Empire, ca. 2nd to 7th century CE. Two incredible metal bowls of lustrous silver hues, one circular and the other elliptical. The circular bowl presents with shallow walls, a striped rim, and a round recessed base. On the interior, the risen base is adorned with a lovely geometrical design comprised of petite indentures in an asterisk-like shape surrounded by a circle. The ovoid vessel features a larger elongated form with a deep center that elegantly shallows near each end, possible to be more adept for pouring liquid. Lovely warm grey and seafoam green patina embellishes the silky smooth exterior of both. Unique and gorgeous examples of Sasanian artistry in everyday objects! Circle bowl: 98% silver, 1.4 % copper, 0.25% gold, weight: 2.45 grams. Oval bowl: 83.5% silver, 10% copper, 4.5% zinc, 1% lead, weight: 4.6 grams. Size of Largest: 7.625" L x 4.375" W x 2.875" H (19.4 cm x 11.1 cm x 7.3 cm)
The Sasanian elite valued beautiful metal objects, especially those made of silver and gold. Sasanian artistic culture, in turn, spread along the Silk Road, influencing metalwork in western Iran and the Caspian Sea, and bowls like these two have been found as far afield as the eastern coast of China.
A similar ovoid bowl of smaller scale can be found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under accession number 67.201.

Condition
Circular bowl slightly misshapen with indentations, especially near base, and shows faint warping of rim, but form is otherwise still very clear. Oval bowl has scratches on one end with linear indentation on one side and minimal warping of rim. Intact and excellent with beautiful earthen deposits and patina throughout.
