Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan, Protoclassic Period, ca. 500 to 1000 CE (figure with beaded headband) and Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Tlatilco, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE (figure with assymetric headdress). A wonderful pair of handbuilt terracotta Pretty Ladies, one from Michoacan and the other from Tlatilco. The Michoacan lady's voluptuous breasts and slightly distended, perhaps pregnant belly, and the Tlatilco figure's ample hips and pronounced belly adorned by incised markings, suggest that they are symbols of fertility. Both are also bedecked with applied jewelry and headdresses to embellish their feminine beauty. Contributing further to their appeal are those expressive faces - the Michoacan lady with enormous coffee bean shaped eyes, a prominent nose, and an open mouth as if singing, speaking, or chanting - the Talitilco lady presenting ovoid eyes with impressed pupils and a protruding nose with full lips below. Two lovely ladies from the Pre-Columbian world. Size: Michoacan 4.625" H (11.7 cm); 5.25" H (13.3 cm) on included custom stand; Tlatlico 4.25" H (10.8 cm); 5.875" H (14.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, aquired prior to 2002
