Central Asia, Ordos Culture, present day Mongolia/China, ca. 500 to 100 BCE. A charming pair of cast copper buckles/attachments - each of a rectangular form framing a standing bull, with traces of gilding on its decorated side. The back is undecorated and has attained a brilliant turquoise patina with two small loops for attachment. The bulls possess robust bodies with modeled musculature. Their faces are turned towards the viewer, with pronounced snouts and curved horns rising above. The power and virility of the bulls are emphasized, as is the wealth of the owner of these fancy buckles. Size: slightly larger buckle (with protruding loop on left side) measures 2.375" W x 1.625" H (6 cm x 4.1 cm); 3.875" H (9.8 cm) on included custom stand.
The Ordos people were equestrian nomads who lived in the grassy, high steppes environment of the Ordos Plateau. Although today this area is a desert, when the Ordos people lived there, it was lush, and cross-cut with many rivers. The Ordos culture is an interesting mix of Central Asian and Chinese, possibly the furthest east group of Scythians. They are famous for their beautiful metalworks, which have been found in graves both for the Ordos and, later, for the Chinese.
