Native American, Midwest to Southeastern United States, Caddo / Mississippian, ca. 1200 to 1800 CE. A lovely pair of hand-built pottery bowls, each presenting a carinated body with a round yet stable base and a gently flared rim. First, the larger bowl exhibits walls that slant slightly inwards and are incised on the exterior with an abstract geometric pattern of tongues, rectangles, and lattice motifs, all arranged into maze-like, horizontal bands. Alternatively, the more petite bowl displays walls that span gently outwards. An abstract incised design adorns the exterior of the walls, boasting a complex decorative program of several horizontal registers containing rectangular and lattice motifs. Caddoan pottery was the finest produced by the Mississippian culture, with very thin walls, intricate motifs, and well-proportioned shapes. Size of largest: 8.9" Diameter x 4.3" H (22.6 cm x 10.9 cm)
Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000

Condition
Both repaired from several pieces with break lines visible and stable hairline fissures extending from breaks. Areas of loss to interior, rim, and base of larger bowl. Expected nicks, chips, pitting, and abrasions to both. Otherwise, both are very nice with great preservation of incised details.
