Artist Friedrich Specht (German, 1839-1909). Engraver Carl Gottlob Specht (German, 1846-?). Two wood engravings entitled "Giraffe" and "Asiatic Elephant" respectively, both signed in the image, ca. late 19th to early 20th century. A lovely pair of colored engravings - one depicting giraffe and the other an elephant, both situated in lovely landscapes. The art is by the German painter and natural history illustrator Friedrich Specht, and both compositions were engraved by his brother Carl Gottlob Specht (1846-?). Interestingly, their other brother, August Specht (1849–1923), was a wildlife painter as well. Hand coloring was added later. Friedrich Specht had his first solo exhibition at Stuttgart Art Academy. He created illustrations of animals in their natural environments for numerous zoology and veterinary science publications, including the first edition of Brehms Tierleben (1864–69) conceived by Alfred Edmund Brehm, Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary (1890—1907), Karl Christoph Vogt's Die Saugetiere in Wort und Bild (1883–89) and Richard Lydekker's Royal Natural History (1894–96).
