- Lot Description
Ancient Egypt, Middle Kingdom, 11th to 14th Dynasty, ca. 2055 to 1650 BCE; New Kingdom to Third Intermediate Period, 18th to 25th Dynasty, ca. 1549 to 653 BCE; Northern Italy, Etruria, ca. 4th century BCE. A lovely set of hand-carved steatite scarabs within Etruscan gold settings. First is a chalky-white scarab from the Middle Kingdom era with incised insectile features on the topside and a carved bull on the underside, all inside a 15K gold setting with triangular fastening panels and a stippled border. Second is a blue-glazed scarab from the New Kingdom to Third Intermediate Period with traces of glazing on the topside, abstract curvilinear incised designs on the bottom, and placed inside a 14K gold setting with a bulb-motif exterior. The ends of each gold setting are covered with five additional bulbs. Size of largest (white scarab): 0.6" L x 0.375" W (1.5 cm x 1 cm); total weight: 3.1 grams (1.5 grams for glazed; 1.6 grams for white); gold quality: 15K (glazed), 14K (white).

Both scarabs have age-commensurate surface wear and abrasions, light fading to incised details, and some fading to natural or glazed coloration, otherwise intact and very good. Gold settings have some tarnishing, indentations to exterior bulbs, and slight bending to overall form. Light earthen deposits throughout.Condition
