First, a copper plate engraving by Eleazar Albin, hand colored by Albin and his daughter Elizabeth, plate 28 of "The Natural History of Birds" of which only 89 sets were published. Below the colorful bird is a line of text that reads, "This Bird was brought from Bengal in 1734 and is the Alcedo Major Bengalensis. E.A. 1737." Paired with this is Johannes Gerardus Keulemans' hand colored engraving of Tockus Monteiri, a brilliant hornbill in its native habitat, perched upon a leafy branch. Size of Monteros Hornbill: 14.375" L x 10.75" W (36.5 cm x 27.3 cm) Size of Alcedo Major Bengalensis: 11.375" L x 9.125" W (28.9 cm x 23.2 cm)
Eleazor Albin was born in Germany, but settled in England in 1707 to earn his living as a watercolor artist for wealthy patrons such as Sir Hans Sloan who founded the British Museum. He was an avid nature lover who observed flowers, insects, and birds. Albin made great contributions to the study of British insects and to the progress of natural history illustration. In the field of ornithology, Albin wrote and illustrated the earliest color books on British birds. His work on birds was actually created later in his life, and he is highly regarded for producing the first large British work on ornithology, which was hand-colored by Albin and his daughter Elizabeth, and published in London from 1731 to 1738. Albin's notes state, "As for the paintings, they are all done from the life, with all the Exactness I could either with my own hand, or my daughters, whom I have taught to draw and paint after the life." (Dictionary of Bird Artist, p. 132)
Johannes Gerardus Keulemans was a Dutch bird artist who illustrated many of the most coveted 19th century ornithological books. Daniel Giraud Elliot was an American zoologist who was one of the founders of the American Museum of Natural History in New York as well as a founder of the American Ornithologist Union. Keulemans' skillfully executed original colored lithograph presents Monteiro's Hornbill in a lush natural environment. Zimmer calls Elliot's final monograph "a comprehensive treatment of the entire family of hornbills", hornbills being a genus between the Kingfishers and the Hoopoes that inhabited Ethiopia, Asia, and Australia.
