Western Europe, France, ca. 19th century CE. A stunning pottery sculpture depicting the head of a French male light infantry soldier. His naturalistic visage is defined by ovoid eyes beneath bushy brows, a slender nose with delineated nostrils, curly sideburns beneath projecting bangs, and pouty lips topped with a thinly-painted mustache. The top of his head is hidden beneath a tall, round-topped hat with a low brim, and a pair of flaps held in front with a tied string bearing tasseled terminals as well as a small medallion in the center. The life-like countenance stares off to the right, perhaps as he issues a command to supporting troops or surveys a battlefield for the most efficient course of action. A fabulous and realistic depiction of French military personnel replete with expert technique and meticulous attention to detail. Size: 8.75" W x 11.5" H (22.2 cm x 29.2 cm); 14" H (35.6 cm) on included custom stand.
