Late Roman Imperial/early Byzantine period, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. An attractive cast-leaded-brass oil lamp attached to a separately-cast tripod stand composed of two pieces. The lamp itself has a beautiful handle composed of two tendril-like extensions that curl up and around until terminating with a crescent moon finial resting between the tips. The hinged lid atop the ovoid body has an integral handle depicting an adorable mouse holding its forepaws to its mouth and a sinuous tail extending behind. The tripod stand has a solid cylindrical neck ringed with several sets of concentric rings, the bottom of which is affixed to a triangular base boasting indented sides adorned with small spheres and lion-paw feet projecting out from beneath upturned corners. Size: 5.875" L x 4.125" W x 11" H (14.9 cm x 10.5 cm x 27.9 cm).
Some scholars have noted that bronze lamps, with their increased cost over pottery lamps, were a kind of heirloom, and were most likely reserved for the richest households. Bronze lamps, which have been theorized to have remained in a family for at least three generations because of their expense, could also have additions added to them - like crosses or new lids - to suit changing styles before being recast. This particular type of lamp proved popular and several production centers for the style arose; ultimately they were distributed widely throughout the Eastern Roman Empire, reaching Asia Minor, Morocco, and even Central Europe.
