Ancient Near East, Late Roman Imperial to early Byzantine Empire, ca. late 4th to 6th century CE. A superb stone mosaic depicting a running ibex with its head raised and pointed towards its posterior. The majestic ungulate sprints to the left along the lower left-hand corner of the mosaic as indicated by the black and gray border and features a lean, muscular body with hooved feet. The forelegs are raised as if preparing for another powerful stride with hind legs extended beneath the slender tail. One almond-shaped eye peers out from behind the lengthy snout and bushy goatee, and from between two perky ears emanate a majestic pair of semicircular horns culminating in narrow points. Seven red and yellow flowers are interspersed across the creamy yellow tesserae and provide a pop of color to this earth-toned composition. Size (mosaic): 35.875" W x 30" H (91.1 cm x 76.2 cm); (frame): 38.125" W x 32.1" H (96.8 cm x 81.5 cm)

Condition
Mounted on a concrete backing and framed for display. Chips, nicks, and stable fissures to some stone tesserae, with abrasions and fading to colors of some tesserae, and light encrustations within some recessed areas, otherwise intact and excellent. Great preservation to tesserae coloration and ibex detailing.
