- Lot Description
Oceania, Solomon Islands, Santa Cruz Islands, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A stunning hand-carved wooden dance club, known as a napa, presenting a lengthy form with a conical handle and a canoe-shaped head. A small knob with a horizontal drill hole is featured at the base of the handle, preventing the weapon from slipping out of one's hand. The head displays one flat side and the other is rounded as it tapers to a curved point, much like the tip of a canoe. The dance staff is embellished with two rectangular protrusions on both sides, each incised with small drill holes that previously held vegetal fiber adornments. A black-painted geometric design of triangular and circular motifs decorates the chocolate-brown wood grain of its smoothly carved surface. Size: 2.5" W x 31.375" H (6.4 cm x 79.7 cm)
Dance is a crucial part of Solomon Islands' culture with ceremonial dances frequently being performed at special occasions, such as weddings, funerals, maturation rites, and during the monsoon season. Dance or napa clubs, which are traditionally struck together as part of these dances, are believed to have been created by a supernatural hero named Bamuda, who is responsible for the canoe-shaped heads. Bamuda is additionally credited with passing on the manufacturing process of the clubs as well as the songs and dances that surround them to an unnamed male recipient whose family reserves traditional rights to perform with the clubs. The geometric patterns that adorn the club are typically used by the people of the Santa Cruz Islands for decorating sacred ritual objects.
