Oceania, Micronesia, Nukuoro Island, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A rare example of a hand-carved wooden canoe model boasting fine form and intricate detailing. The round-bottomed canoe is of a lengthy size and is fitted with a domed shell on top. Both the top and bottom are fastened together with several lengths of twisted thread, and a length of cowrie snail shell ornaments line the middle of both sides. The shell also features dozens of incised linear details that form parallel, crosshatch, and diamond-shaped motifs. Smooth patina envelops the entire model. Size: 20.25" L x 2.3" W (51.4 cm x 5.8 cm)
