North America, Pacific Northwest Coast, probably around Alaska, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden captain's log stamp of a squat and sturdy form with a slightly slanted top, smooth walls, and a flat base with a relief carving of a whale. The whale decoration is covered in black ink that suggests this stamp was used to notate whale sightings during a ship's voyage. Nice caramel-hued patina covers the entire tool. Size: 1.8" W x 1.5" H (4.6 cm x 3.8 cm)
Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, bestowed 2006; ex-J. Malter collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired before 2006
