Latin America, Mexico, late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wonderful grouping of eighteen copper and silver milagros in a variety of shapes and forms set in a wooden frame with a lustrous brass background and a decorative leaded brass border. Featured front and center, the largest milagro is comprised of copper and exhibits the shape of a heart with a sword through it. This form is one of many known as the sacred heart of God, which represents Jesus's compassion for humanity. Placed in a circle, the remaining milagros consist of two birds, one leg, two hearts, one horse, one pig, two pairs of eyes, one arm, one standing figure in profile, four kneeling figures in prayer, one human head, and one bust. All of these smaller milagros are made of silver, except for the heart on the bottom right which is copper with 32% silver. Milagro is Spanish for "miracle". Also known as ex-voto, dijes, or promesas, milagros are religious folk charms often used as votive offerings to pray for healing. They are usually attached to altars, shrines, or areas of churches.
