East Asia, China, late Qing to early Republic, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An impressive porcelain jar with an apple-form body and flat base topped with a circular lid. Enveloped in a creamy beige glaze, this intriguing vessel is adorned with a garden scene of five figures painted in tones of blue. The intriguing narrative shows a tall man with a moustache wearing a dark robe and carrying a stick as he leans to his left to talk to a shorter bald man. Three other petite men surround the towering character; one stands behind him laughing, another stands to his left holding a palm leaf up high and pointing at the tall figure as though about to strike him, and the third is shown to the right as he runs towards the other figures carrying a large vase filled with weapons. The area surrounding them is decorated by a lengthy fence that spans the entirety of the scene, while swirling clouds are featured above them, and several rocks are scattered throughout the scene. A pointed knob protrudes from the center of the lid, functioning as a handle. Size: 9.125" W x 9.25" H (23.2 cm x 23.5 cm)
