West Africa, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Senufo Tribe, ca. late 19th to early 20th century. A finely hand-carved figural stool or mount presenting a standing female dressed in a short sleeved shirt and a skirt, her visage presenting bold features including large crescent shaped eyes, a pronounced curved nose, closed lips, cup-shaped ears, and a centrally parted lobed coiffure topped by a large conical headdress - her skirt embellished with incised kente cloth geometric motifs. The figure stands atop an integral round pedestal. The rectangular stool/mount atop her headdress presenting lovely incised decoration (a large x-motif across and striated borders) was attached via wooden dowels. A wonderful example from the Senufo. Condition
Fissures visible on integral base that may have been stabilized/repaired. Inactive insect damage to the back of the base and figure. Age cracks on verso of the figure's chest, back, skirt, and headdress. Old repair with old staple to the rectangular stool/platform atop her headdress. Age cracks to the platform/stool and old losses to peripheries as shown. Expected surface wear to figure and seat/platform as shown. Nice lustrous patina to the figure from handling that has developed over time.
