Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. An intricately hand-carved wooden statuette of a standing Buddha or Buddhist monk of slender form draped in kasaya robes belted midway with elongated arms hanging from his square shoulders to midway on his calf. With downturned eyes, a small nose, and a peaceful smile, the figure's elegant visage epitomizes tranquility. Long ears with drooping lobes dangle from each side of his round face; a remnant from Buddha's life as a prince when luxurious jewels ornamented his ears, stretching them to his shoulders. Their current drooping form now symbolizes Buddha's casting off of his former earthly possessions. Topped with tight locks of curled hair and an elaborate finial headdress, the sand hued figure stands upon a small base as a sash gracefully falls over his left shoulder, reaching to his knees on both his back and front. Remaining shades of verdant green and lustrous polish speckle the surface, nicely complimenting his brown and tan base. An excellent piece sure to assist in one's search for inner peace! Size: 2.25" L x 1.75" W (5.7 cm x 4.4 cm); 7.25" H (18.4 cm) on included custom stand.
