Southeast Asia, Philippines, Moro people, ca. late 17th to early 18th century CE. A wonderful set of chainmail armor along with a leaded-brass burgonet helmet. The armor shirt has its main structure composed of thousands of individually linked iron ringlets that also secure thick iron plates in place for areas of reinforcement and protection. The lower fringe features two rows of trapezoidal panels that create a protective skirt, and the upper sleeves consist entirely of mail links. Accompanying the armor is a Moro leaded-brass burgonet helmet of a distinctly Spanish style with hinged ear flaps, decorative perforations along the central crest and lower peripheries, and a frontal sconce for adorning with a feather, flag, or other ornament. The sturdy brim is peaked in the front and flared along the verso. Both helmet and plate-mail shirt are covered in attractive patina. Size (chainmail): 25.875" W x 32" H (65.7 cm x 81.3 cm); (helmet): 12.1" W x 6.25" H (30.7 cm x 15.9 cm)
Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired between 2014 and 2018 (helmet); (armor) ex-Auctions Imperial, Cheyenne, Wyoming, USA; (helmet) ex-Fagan Arms, Clinton Township, Michigan, USA
