Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Proto-Nazca, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A fantastic textile panel of a sizable form composed of both natural cotton and camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of cobalt blue, sage, forest green, crimson, citrine, coffee, fuchsia, wheat, cream, sky blue, and pink. The central body is an extremely delicate, gauze-like panel with loosely woven strands that would have perhaps been wrapped around the body of a deceased individual. The top periphery is lined with sixty-six pairs of ovoid 'legs' beneath a red-and-black fringe that has petite areas of blue, beige, and green fibers. The bottom periphery features a bottom register of fifty-five expressive trophy heads, a central register of thirty-one abstract hummingbirds, and a top register of eighty-three pairs of ovoid panels displaying abstract fish. A wonderful example from ancient Peru! Mounted on a museum-quality display fabric. Size (textile): 54.75" L x 23.25" W (139.1 cm x 59.1 cm); (display fabric): 76" L x 40.5" W (193 cm x 102.9 cm)
Sizable textile examples such as this can only survive due to the absolutely dry conditions found in the southern regions of Peru. In regions of Southern Peru and the surrounding areas, rainfall has never been recorded since the Spanish first ventured here in the early 16th century.

Condition
Restoration to several interior areas of gauze textile. Upper and lower mantle registers are sewn to gauze textile and are likely not original to the gauze textile. Loss to one fish panel on lower register as shown. Loosening and fraying to some interior, peripheral, and fringe fibers, with light staining to some areas, and minor creasing. Nice traces of original coloration throughout.
