1116Nano Lopez (Colombian, b. 1955). Signature stamped and numbered #211/320 "Olivia" bronze , 2011 AND a hand-signed #211/320 giclee on canvas study for the "Olivia" bronze, 2011. From the sold-out edition of Nano Lopez's large-scale "Olivia" bronzes, this statue presents the lovely giraffe in a seated position with "Long Necks Are Sexy" and other clever inscriptions and quintessential Lopez motifs adorning her body. Lopez's technique combines traditional and innovative methods. The piece was created via the long-established lost wax process that originated in ancient Greece and Rome. Once the bronze was cast, Lopez added countless details via metal chasing, applied patinas to imbue the work with vibrant colors, and finally applied several coats of UV protective lacquer to both enhance and preserve the patina. According to Nano Lopez, "The transformation from clay to bronze has always been magical to me." (artist's website) One of Lopez' sold out designs, replete with impressive artistry and technique. Size: 19.5" L x 28.25" W x 34.125" H (49.5 cm x 71.8 cm x 86.7 cm)
Nano Lopez has created amusing narratives for many of his sculptures, bringing their personalities to life. In Lopez's words, "Here Olivia is sitting in the meadow overlooking the rolling hills, and enjoying a soft cool breeze. She is attracted to long necks but not so much lions. With birds she gets along very well and enjoys listening to their chatter." In addition, Lopez embellishes his "Nanimals" with numbers, letters, and road signs imbuing them with even more pizzazz. Olivia is extensively decorated with flora and fauna including various leaves and blossoms as well as a dragonfly, frogs, fish, and more. We especially adore the lovely pair of birds perched around a birdbath upon Olivia's back!
Accompanying the bronze is a giclee on canvas that is hand-signed by the artist and annotated by hand with the edition number that matches the edition number of the sculpture as well as "giraffe/no lions/Africa" and the humorous phrase, "long necks are sexy"!
