1115Nano Lopez (Colombian, b. 1955). Signature stamped and numbered #253/840 "Kiko" bronze, 2016 AND hand-signed #253/840 giclee on canvas study for "Kiko" bronze, 2016. A large-scale Nano Lopez bronze statue of "Kiko" the dragon asleep on "Kiko's Rock" where he is dreaming that he is surrounded by floating ice cream swirls and attempting to lick the largest swirl of this delectable delight. What's more the sculpture can rotate 360 degrees, enabling us to see every last detail! Lopez's special technique combines traditional and innovative methods. The piece was created via the long-established lost wax process that originated in ancient Greece and Rome. Once the bronze was cast, Lopez added countless details via metal chasing, applied patinas to imbue the work with vibrant colors, and finally applied several coats of UV protective lacquer to both enhance and preserve the patina. According to Nano Lopez, "The transformation from clay to bronze has always been magical to me." (artist's website) One of Lopez' most beloved designs, replete with impressive artistry and technique. Size: 23" L x 24" W x 19" H (58.4 cm x 61 cm x 48.3 cm)
Nano Lopez has created amusing narratives for many of his sculptures, bringing their personalities to life. In Lopez's words, "Kiko is seen here laying on his favorite rock, known to everyone as 'Kiko's Rock' and actually he is asleep, but in his dreams (which is how we see him here) he is dreaming that there are a bunch of ice creams floating in the water all around him, and of course he is trying to get a good lick of the biggest one." In addition, Lopez embellishes his "Nanimals" with numbers, letters, and road signs imbuing them with even more pizzazz. Kiko and Kiko's Rock are extensively decorated with flora and fauna - a pelican, another seabird in flight, a seahorse, a beaver, a turtle, a totemic figure, a waterfall, various leaves and blossoms - as well as numbers, letters, buttons, gears, words like "wings" and endearing phrases such as "hugs and kisses"!
