Native American, Southwestern United States, Mogollon / Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), ca. 1175 to 1300 CE. This is a stunning bichrome pottery bowl of a large size with an intricate motif! The vessel rests on a rounded but stable base, and the hemispherical walls rise up to a thick rim that leads into the deep interior. The bowl was created using the coil-and-scrape method then slip painted with a white ground and black geometric and linear patterning. The central register that runs from rim to rim on the interior contains stepped shapes. Outside this register are large circles with bold, parallel lines and crosshatching at the center. While the interior of the basin is remarkable and busy with painted shapes, the unadorned exterior is minimally slip painted in white. Size: 11.25" Diameter x 6" H (28.6 cm x 15.2 cm)
