- Lot Description
Pre-Columbian, North/Central Coast Peru, Trujillo region, Moche, ca. 100 to 500 CE. A gorgeous textile panel of a sizable form comprised of natural cotton fibers in hues of pink, fuchsia, crimson, brown, yellow, green, and white. The main body is constructed from loosely woven fibers in a gauze style that would have perhaps been used for wrapping the body of a deceased individual. The top of the textile bears a colorful border depicting several abstract anthropomorphic faces that mirror one another with either red or yellow faces. The face-filled areas are separated with broad hexagons outlined with petite, colorful spots, and the lower periphery is enclosed with vibrant foliate motifs. Mounted atop a museum-quality display fabric. Size (textile): 52.25" L x 19.875" W (132.7 cm x 50.5 cm); (display fabric): 70" L x 35.25" W (177.8 cm x 89.5 cm).
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, 1950 to 1960s

#148266Upper border likely not originally attached to gauze textile body. Gauze textile sewn atop modern pink fabric panel for posterity and presentation. Minor loosening and fraying to some interior and peripheral threads of gauze body and upper border, with light staining to original coloration in some areas, and minor creasing. Iconography and original coloration still visible and attractive.Condition
