Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 2nd to 5th century CE. A sizable example of a hand-built pottery jar depicting a standing male warrior figure. Highly burnished and adorned with maroon and cream pigment atop the orange-slipped ground, the figure presents with bare feet beneath attenuated legs, a segmented skirt decorated with zigzagging lines, stripes bangles on his wrists, and a broad pectoral shawl overlaid with the frontal lappets of his domed helmet. The warrior stares forward from generously lidded, almond-shaped eyes and exhibits a slightly crooked nose, thin lips between shallow nasolabial folds, and a massive pair of bullseye-motif earspools. A slender chinstrap secures his helmet atop his head, and a broad spout with a slightly flared rim rises behind his head.
The Moche were perhaps the only ancient culture in the Americas to produce portrait vessels. The sculptor's intent was to present a very realistic depiction, and interestingly, scholars have been able to follow the progression of age and rank of several of individuals portrayed in pottery.

Repair to spall on proper left temple as well as repair and restoration to back half of spout; resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines on spout.
