Latin America, Mexico, ca. mid-20th century CE. Wow! A stunning wood festival mask, skillfully carved into an elaborate openwork form and adorned with vibrant hues of emerald, lemon, crimson, cyan, powder blue, peach, coral, taupe, grey, black, and white. This brilliant vizard consists of a central carved face, with eye and mouth holes for the wearer, surrounded by 2 lizards with a coyote head at the top, another pair of lizards on either side, and 3 additional reptiles with standing male figures at the bottom. Nearly lost amongst the reptilian maze, the mask presents a concerned countenance, as though fearful of the beasts that surround it, and presents almond-shaped eyes of sky blue beneath a furrowed brow, high cheekbones, a sharp nose, full lips that project forward and are held slightly open beneath a thin moustache, and a pointed chin. The lizards all face inward, except for one at the bottom who is faced downwards, and roar fiercely at the central face, displaying sharp, jagged teeth. Each one is decorated in various intricate patterns of spots and striations. The coyote head at the top is equally as vicious, also displaying an open mouth of pointed teeth, but with almond-shaped eyes, a narrowed brow, and perky, elongated ears. At the bottom of the mask, the pair of male figures both stand upon the side of the lowest lizard of the vizard. Their inner arms are curved upwards to hold the leg of the central lizard and their outer arms serve also as lizard legs. Size: 11.125" W x 25.125" H (28.3 cm x 63.8 cm)
