Western Europe, Germany, Bischberg, Jurassic, ca. 175 to 171 million years ago. This is an amazing decorator display of fossilized ammonites and bivalves with great aesthetic! Dating to the days of the dinosaurs, this large Jurassic matrix displays stunning prehistoric ocean life preserved as it was when first entombed on an ancient seabed nearly 200 million years ago. With its rich golden hue and deep orange fossils, this blocky host rock full of Upper Jurassic marine life, makes for a super display specimen and the site where this example was collected is unique with no commercial production, the intense golden-orange hue is completely natural! Numerous fossil ammonites and bivalves can be found throughout the rock matrix, even on the sides, an interesting piece to view from any angle. A masterpiece of the natural prehistoric world from a rare location and this is recommended for collectors desiring uncommon fossil formations! Size (ammonite fossils): 1.5" L (3.8 cm) to 2" L (5.1 cm); (matrix): 14.5" L x 3.5" W x 19.5" H (36.8 cm x 8.9 cm x 49.5 cm)
Ammonites are important index fossils - that is, they often link the rock layer in which they are found to specific geological time periods. Ammonites like these, are used by geologists and paleontologists as a zone marker for the time periods from which they are attributed.
