Pre-Columbian, Southern Peru, Inca hinterlands (Chucu), ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A stunning painted plaque made from a large fragment of pottery with a slightly curved profile. The concave face is painted with linear chevron shapes in hues of yellow ochre, orange, white, and shimmery gray - the glimmering flecks are mica. Plaques like this example were placed as offerings to Pacha Mama and Pacha Papa - Mother and Father Earth - to protect the health of the livestock and the human inhabitants of the clan. The pieces used to create these panels were fragments from larger vessels, and from this piece alone, the original vessel must have been quite sizable. A lovely and vibrant example! Size: 11" L x 8" W (27.9 cm x 20.3 cm)
