Walter Howato (Native American, Hopi Pueblo, 1921-2003), ca. mid-20th century CE. A larger-than-average cottonwood kachina doll representing Aholi, the lieutenant to a kachina chief and a companion of Eototo. Known for his distinctive appearance, Aholi wears a tall conical mask with a ruff of fox fur, a vibrantly painted cotton canvas blanket cloak, red moccasins, and carries a large staff adorned with feathers and yarn. A kachina of Third Mesa, he appears alongside Eototo in Bean Dances. Signed in pencil on the foot, "W. HOWATO." This piece may be an early carving by Howato, as his later works are known for their intentionally aged and antique aesthetic. Size: 6" W x 25.5" H (15.2 cm x 64.8 cm)
Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, acquired from 1990 to 2005
