Walter Howato (Native American, Hopi Pueblo, 1921-2003), ca. mid-20th century CE. A large cottonwood kachina sculpture depicting a Kuwan Heheya dancer, featuring a removable mask. The mask is crafted from stiff leather panels sewn together, with wooden tab ears, a T-shaped nose, a green yarn ruff, and adorned with magpie, macaw, and turkey feathers. Beyond the intricately carved figure and mask, Howato added additional elements: a shell and turquoise beaded necklace, a red felt sash, and leather arm and wrist cuffs with a polished cowhorn bead. In the dancer's hands is a rattle, alongside a symbol of the rain cloud - represented by three half circles with vertical lines. The foot of the sculpture is signed "Howato." The Kuwan Heheya, also known as the Colorful Heheya, is a ceremonial figure representing vibrant rain dances and seasonal rituals in Hopi culture. Size: 8" W x 25" H (20.3 cm x 63.5 cm)
Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired between 1960 - 1990
