East Asia, Korea, Joseon (Choson) Dynasty, ca. 19th century. A monumental painting of the Buddha assembly, skillfully hand painted on handmade paper in rich jewel tones of scarlet, emerald, sapphire, and gold to embellish the sumptuous garments as well as contrasting neutral hues for the faces and hands - with a floral-patterned silk border of champagne hues, set in a custom gilt frame under glass. The Buddha sits in lotus position upon a high lotus throne, his hands displaying the Abhyaya Mudra - the gesture of fearlessness, representing protection, peace, and dispelling fear - surrounded by a host of 28 divinities arranged in a generally symmetrical manner to either side of Shakyamuni; among these are bodhisattvas, disciples, the Four Heavenly Kings, and other protective deities. Size: painting: 76" W x 64.7" H (193 cm x 164.3 cm); painting + border: 80" W x 69.25" H (203.2 cm x 175.9 cm); frame: 85" W x 74" H (215.9 cm x 188 cm)
The central focus of the painting is Shakyamuni, whose tranquil visage presents with downcast eyes, elegant arched brows, a slender nose, closed lips, and characteristically elongated ears - once stretched from wearing elaborate earrings when he was a prince, but no longer, as they now suggest that the Buddha can hear all that is asked for and needed in the earthly world. His peaceful countenance is topped by a rounded ushnisha symbolizing the wisdom and knowledge acquired after attaining enlightenment, and surrounded by a halo.
Quite large and rather rare, paintings like this example were created for Korean temples where they traditionally have served as the primary focus of worship during celebrations of the Buddha's birthday and the Yeongsanjae ritual, when prayers are offered for the honored deceased on the 49th day following their death.
A smaller, unframed Korean Joseon (Choson) dynasty painting on silk sold at Bonhams for $7500 in the Asian Decorative Arts sale - 11 December 2015, lot 2471.

Condition
Expected age wear with creases and waviness. Some areas of staining. Painting has shifted a bit within the framing. A painting of this stature is certainly worthy of conservation. Some chips to frame finish. Otherwise frame as well as glass are intact; frame is wired for suspension.
