North America, Western United States, Montana, Hell Creek Formation, Cretaceous, ca. 68 to 65.5 million years ago. This is an incredible fossilized tooth from the king of dinosaurs: Tyrannosaurus rex, famously known as T-Rex or the Tyrant Lizard King! This naturally lustrous maxillary tooth has a beautiful black and mottled brown hue and retains most of the serrated edges which are well preserved and tactile! The serrations helped this dinosaur to slice through the flesh of prey or scavenged remains like a steak knife. When measured on the curve, the tooth is nearly 2.5 inches in length and quite thick, this is truly the most iconic and best tooth on the market from a special dinosaur with a monstrous reputation. The dark black and brown patina is lovely, the enamel is all natural and original- no restoration! The teeth are worn from age, fossilization, and perhaps use- the size alone suggests a mature animal that had both size and power on its side when hunting prey! Size: 2.41" L x 1.1" W (6.1 cm x 2.8 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.
The most famous dinosaurs of all time are undoubtedly the large, meat-eating members of the Tyrannosauridae family. This family includes species such as Nanotyrannus, Albertosaurus, Gorgosaurus, Daspletosaurus, Tarbosaurus, and the most infamous of all, Tyrannosaurus rex. The emergence of all tyrannosaurids was short-lived and occurred in only a 15-million-year span in the Late Cretaceous Period before their extinction about 65 million years ago. The first recognized fossil remains of Tyrannosaurus were discovered in Colorado, U.S.A. in the 1890s; one of the first partial skeletons came from the Hell Creek Formation in 1902.
