Ancient Seas, Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Middle Miocene to end of Pliocene eras, ca. 28 to 1.5 million years ago. A large and gorgeous fossilized tooth from the massive prehistoric shark, the megalodon! The tooth has creamy and warm hues of beige, orange, honey, and pale peach that form naturally from the chemicals and minerals present in the water and sediment during fossilization. Along the outer enamel edges are the dozens of serrations that would enable the shark to tear flesh off bone by simply thrashing his head. These serrations are now pleasantly tactile and run along both sides to the root. The bourlette and root are matte and contrast nicely with the glossy enamel. Megalodons were one of the most powerful predators, estimated to have grown up to 59 feet long! Teeth are all that remain of these ancient creatures, whose skeletal structures - like those of all sharks - were made of cartilage and did not fossilize when they became extinct 3.6 million years ago. Size: 4.6" L x 3.52" W (11.7 cm x 8.9 cm)
