North America, Western United States, Montana, Hell Creek Formation, late Cretaceous period, ca. 70 to 65.5 million years ago. This is an interesting, fossilized piece of a hadrosaur dinosaur, Edmontosaurus annectens, an ungual which forms the tip of the toe and ends with a nail! The bone has a thick base that connected to a joint, and the spade shaped tip was the "claw" which resembles a hoof shaped nail. Because these were herbivores, they did not need hooked, tearing claws, and this ungual is a soft rounded shovel shape - much like a horse's hoof. These hadrosaurs had 4 digits on each of the front limbs - the center two were unguals - and the 3 toes on the back legs all had unguals as well. Looking at our own fingertips, in comparison to this single ungual, really gives a great perspective on the size of this dinosaur! Size: 4.75" L x 2" W x 4" H (12.1 cm x 5.1 cm x 10.2 cm)
Edmontosaurus was a species of hadrosaur, better known as duck billed dinosaurs and their name means the "lizard of Edmonton" after the capital city of the province where they were first unearthed. They were facultative bipeds, capable of walking or running on two legs, but usually walking on all fours, and their fore legs were not as large as the hind legs.
