Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. This is a special one! A large, beautifully carved and painted wood model of an outrigger canoe featuring a large fishing platform and wonderful decorative elements. The outrigger is connected to the canoe hull in a realistic manner, via two poles inserted into the canoe sides, which allows free movement with the sea. Three decorative elements rise up from the edge of the fishing platform, each carved, incised, and painted with red and black diamonds. Dramatic fish form their terminals, their sharp teeth clenched around the poles. Less threatening fish and a sea bird decorate the prow of the ship, which rises high above the rest of the model. The canoe's sides feature incised geometric and abstract zoomorphic motifs colored with black, red, and white pigment. Size: 28" L x 19.5" W x 8.15" H (71.1 cm x 49.5 cm x 20.7 cm)
All of these carved and painted details make this a work of art in addition to a realistic rendering of an incredibly important part of coastal Papuan life. Vessels of this style were the backbone of the Oceanic economy for millennia, allowing people to gather food and travel between islands easily.

Condition
Lovely condition with all parts accounted for aside from the upper fin of one of the fish on the fishing platform. Very light wear commensurate with age including some deposits (mainly on interior) and light wear to the motifs. Rich patina on wood surface. The outrigger and fishing platform are attached to the canoe body by poles (as would have been the case with a real Papuan ship) which means that they have some free movement.
