Central Europe, Poland, Holy Cross Mountains, Kowala Formation, Middle Devonian (Givetian), ca. 394.5 to 389.1 million years ago. A large shale matrix containing sizable brachiopod fossils assembled across the surface. Coming from Central Europe, this is a huge museum-class brachiopod fossil colony with supremely preserved and three-dimensional examples of Schizophoria and Mucrospirifer brachiopods complete with both valves closed and intact. There are nearly 100 lab-cleaned and preserved brachiopod fossils on this massive shale piece, arranged as a colony, much as how they would have been grouped underwater. Most brachiopod fossils are found measuring less than 0.25 inches (0.635 cm) across, these brachiopods measure 3 to 5 times that size! These species are found in the Middle Devonian Kowala Formation of the Holy Cross Mountains in Poland where the oldest fossilized footprints of tetrapods have been found. Size (matrix): 18" L x 10" W (45.7 cm x 25.4 cm); (brachiopods): 0.8" L (2 cm) to 1.3" L (3.3 cm)
This species of Schizophoria, of the middle Devonian era, is found in the Holy Cross Mountains in Poland. These mountains are a site dating back to the time of the world's oldest tetrapod footprints ever found - fossil evidence of the first existence of four-legged vertebrates walking on land. This is a large and very impressive display specimen of Devonian brachiopods, noteworthy for their famous scientific site in paleontology! Brachiopod fossils are often neglected in fossil collections despite the important role they played in the history of life on our planet. Most brachiopod fossils we see are in their raw state and somewhat unattractive. Professionally cleaning these invertebrates reveals their highly detailed and aesthetic anatomy in their shells yet, if not properly prepared in a lab, they look little more than rocks. Each of these brachiopods were extracted from the host rock and cleaned with pneumatic tools and air abrasives, the end result is this beautiful brachiopod fossil colony of substantial size, each specimen is of the finest preservation and fully lifelike with 3D detail!
