Pre-Columbian, Panama, Chiriqui culture, ca. 500 to 1200 CE. Masterfully carved by an ancient craftsperson from a single block of volcanic stone (likely andesite), this example features elaborate carved decorative elements on all sides and a large, projecting macaw (New World parrot) head denoting its "front". The three triangular legs are also carved into openwork forms that resemble abstract avian forms. The sides are incised with interlocking mat motifs, while the head has a feathered texture around the eye, created using skillful carving. The eye bulges outward and the beak curves under itself dramatically. Metates developed initially for the utilitarian purpose of grinding corn; however, they evolved into meaningful ritual objects, replete with strong iconography and intriguing sculptural forms. Examples of a larger scale but similar degree of decorative carving and iconographic symbolism were sometimes used to seat a departed lord on his journey to the afterlife. Size: 11" L x 25.75" W x 11.2" H (27.9 cm x 65.4 cm x 28.4 cm)
Macaws and other parrots are often symbolically linked with prophecy due to their ability to "speak", and in many mythologies they have the role of messenger/intermediary between humans and gods. Additionally, the Mesoamericans highly valued their feathers as elite ornamentation, and they were traded across hundreds and even thousands of miles.
