East Asia, China, Ming to Qing Dynasty, ca. 15th to 18th century CE. A large wooden statue of the goddess Guanyin seated on a pedestal, her colorful robes draped elegantly around her. Her hands are clasped in her lap in a meditative mudra, with elongated fingernails symbolizing her spiritual status. She wears a multistrand necklace across her chest and a crown upon her head, further emphasizing her elite nature. In China, both men and women from the upper classes, grew their nails long as a symbol of wealth, indicating freedom from manual labor. Guanyin, a bodhisattva of compassion in East Asian Buddhism, is revered as the "Goddess of Mercy" for her ability to alleviate suffering and offer protection, hearing the cries of the world. Heavy losses due to old inactive insect activity. The entire verso of the lower pedestal base is missing and has large losses and bore holes throughout. The statue is still able to sit upright unaided. Large pressure cracks and fissures- especially legs and base, with a deep crack radiating from the left leg to the lap area. Abrasions and chips. Repainted in modern times with fading to pigments.
