Africa, South Sudan, Bahr el-Ghazal region, Bongo peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A haunting, hand-carved wooden figure of ambiguous gender atop a conical post. The figure's body is dominated by a large head and elongated torso, with angular shoulders, and long slender limbs. The rounded, somewhat heart-shaped face presents a pleasing visage comprised drilled, circular eyes that are deeply inset, a more naturalistic nose, and full, slightly parted lips. The eyes were most likely once filled with beads or stones. The ears are inset ovoids on either side of the head and the figure has no discernible hair. The figure's stance is interesting, almost casual with slightly bent knees and the right hand placed over the abdominal area. Size: 6.95" L x 18.85" W x 71.55" H (17.7 cm x 47.9 cm x 181.7 cm); 73.55" H (186.8 cm) on included custom stand.
The Bongo and nearby peoples carved and erected large wooden sculptures to memorialize their dead. These were placed at graves and sometimes inside huts, dressed and decorated with ornaments. It is unclear if their carved features were intended to represent those of the deceased; however, their ornamentation often included bracelets and scarification patterns that were unique to individuals.
