- Lot Description
Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. late 19th century CE. A sizeable arched icon delineated in egg tempera and gilt on wood, depicting a sainted king standing in full view, lavishly dressed in regal vestments - a red cloak with ermine lining and collar, a golden cuirass-like vestment, white stockings, and elaborate laced boots. He holds a staff with an image of the Holy Face in his right hand and extends his left hand to a table covered with sumptuous red and green fabrics adorned by a gold decorative pattern - where his crown, a Gospel, and an orb rest. His halo and wrist cuffs are embellished with gold leaf. The heavily modeled features and presence of shadows and chiaroscuro demonstrate the influence of Western art traditions, especially those of the Renaissance. The relatively flat golden background and Russian strapwork border make for a rich contrast. Size: 19.25" W x 33.25" H (48.9 cm x 84.5 cm)
Icons (icon means "image" in Greek) are sacred objects within the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition. Found in homes as well as churches, these painted images depict holy persons and saints as well as illustrate scenes from the Scriptures. Icons are not worshiped, but are instead venerated for their ability to focus the power of an individual's prayer to God. As such they are truly "windows into heaven."
