Western Europe, Neoclassical, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A gorgeous Neoclassical brooch with an 86.1% gold (equivalent to 20K+) setting around an agate cameo featuring the elegant bust of a young woman dressed in Classical-style garments. The agate stone is a warm red-orange citrine hue and contrasts with the white in the cameo. This woman is skillfully rendered, her delicate curling tendrils of hair escaping from her coiffure wrap, and the folds of her clothing are naturalistic. The surrounding brooch setting is an elaborate openwork of scrolling foliate shapes within a beaded border. The rounded top tapers to the narrow end - the verso of which houses the clasp. The peripheries contain four protruding finials with spherical tips- all keeping with the Neoclassical style! The lengthy bar pin on the verso is intact and articulates- and this magnificent brooch is wearable! Size: 4" L x 1.8" W (10.2 cm x 4.6 cm); gold quality: 86.1% (equivalent to 20K+); weight 26.6 grams
