East Asia, Japan, late Edo Period, ca. early 19th century CE. A splendid wooden shrine of Buddha and 2 attendants or bodhisattvas, likely Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthamaprapta, enveloped in black lacquer and lustrous gilding, in front of a coppered back panel. Standing barefoot on a plinth, the tranquil deity raises his right hand with the palm facing outward in the abhayamudra - gesture of fearlessness - while his left hand points downward, extending the middle and index fingers and pressing the tips of the ring and little finger against the thumb in the prana mudra - gesture of life force. Lengthy robes cascade in billowing folds down his slender figure, as his serene visage displays elegantly arched brows, down-turned eyes beneath heavy lids, a flat nose with broad nostrils, bowed lips, and a petite chin. Size: 8.2" L x 16.8" W x 36" H (20.8 cm x 42.7 cm x 91.4 cm)
His hair is piled into an ushnisha atop his head, as an urna, or byakugo in Japanese, dots his forehead. Long ears fall to either side of his head, representing his rejection of the material life and earthly pleasures. Flanking Buddha are 2 bodhisattvas on shorter pedestals, each draped in sashes and robes with spiraling sleeves, capped by a tall headdress, and adorned with crowns and necklaces formed from metal wires and glass beads. A large back panel further embellishes the 3 figures, boasting relief decoration of a swirling scroll border and meandering vines surrounding Buddha with 7 petite, seated figures with blue hair, each sitting upon a lotus flower. The left side of the base is inscribed with 14 red-painted lines of Japanese text discussing the donors of the shrine and the temple where it was located.
