- Lot Description
East Asia, China, Qing dynasty, 19th century CE. Beautifully painted in black ink on fabric, a two-sided Chinese textile with fabulous auspicious imagery. One side presents an octagonal panel featuring an attendant rowing a boat that carries a woman with sea waves below, the moon and clouds above, and a flower to either side. This panel is framed by registers of flowering tendrils above and below, and to either side, a playful child above a flowering plant in a vase. The other painted panel presents a female carrying an infant and riding a dragon with an attendant behind and plumes of dragon smoke in the field - flanked by a flowering plant in an urn to either side. Below is a horizontal register depicting three figures in a garden setting, one sitting before a table and potting a flowering plant. The wonderful auspicious imagery and the inclusion of children suggest that this piece was intended for domestic use, perhaps to drape over furniture or mount on the wall in a home for good luck. Size: 53.5" W (135.9 cm); 87" H (221 cm) on included custom stand; gold painted bamboo pole atop measures 65.25" W (165.7 cm)
At the top of the panel with the woman and child riding a dragon, there is an attached black textile panel with a knotted fringe and two decorative sashes furnished with bells. At the top and bottom of the boating scene are narrow wooden panels that are adorned by 9 bronze floral ornaments - the central one on the top panel is furnished with a hook.
