North America, Northwestern United States, Alaska, ca. 19th century CE. A massive ivory tusk from an Alaskan walrus! The base is more textured and has a definitive line where the gumline ends, and the portion of the tusk that protrudes from the walrus' mouth begins. The base has a shallow opening that reveals some of the tusk interior and the end of the pulp. The tusks are the incisor teeth of walrus, and their social standing is determined by the size of their tusks. This is a sizable example, so this walrus would have perhaps been top of his group! Walruses also use their tusks to haul themselves along ice or rock. Males sometimes use their tusks for fighting and have been known to stab each other with them, especially in competition for mates. This tusk would be a great display piece! Size: 29" L x 3" W (73.7 cm x 7.6 cm)
The ivory pre-dates 1900 and was acquired before the 1970 ban on ivory trade.
