Juan Moreira (Cuban, 1938-2022). "Venus Africana" acrylic on canvas, 1993. Signed and dated at lower right. A striking painting titled "Venus Africana" by Juan Moreira, a Cuban modern artist who dedicated his work to the culture, beliefs, and traditions of his people. Moreira's "African Venus" is a totemic, idol-like figure comprised of abstract human and mythical zoomorphic features, painted in a Cubist manner that demonstrates Moreira's admiration for both Pablo Picasso and Wifredo Lam. Moreira was among the most important Cuban artists of the modern era, and his imagery captures symbolic creators of life and deities that were very much integrated with the natural world such as "Venus Africana". Size (painting): 21.5" L x 18" W (54.6 cm x 45.7 cm) Size (frame): 27.375" L x 24.25" W (69.5 cm x 61.6 cm)
